If you would like to try a few things before you have a technician repair your computer, here are a few common things to try.

If you computer will not boot up:

  • Up plug all peripherals from your computer. (e.g. scanners, printer, external hard drives) If one of these devices has gone bad, it can in some cases, prevent your computer from booting up. If your computer boots up with only the keyboard, mouse, power cord, and monitor plugged in, reconnect the other devices one at a time to see which of the devices is keeping the computer from booting. Once you know which device is causing the problem, have it repaired or replaced.
  • Your computer may boot up in to safe made and allow you to repair it. When the computer starts to boot up, tap the "F8" key about once per second. You should be given a text screen with boot options. Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode", Press enter. If the computer boots up, you can look in the computers error logs to see if a program or device is listing any problems. To get to the error logs, right click on "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Vista). Select "Manage" from the pop up menu. Click "Event Viewer". As you look at the events or entries in the log files, the most recent entries are usually at the top. Double clicking an event will give you more information about that event. Events marked with a red circle and an exclamation point indicate a critical error. One of these events may help you see what needs to be repaired in your computer.

If your computer will not power on at all:

  • Check to make sure that all power connections are firmly plugged in. If you are using a surge protector, try plugging the computer directly into the wall socket to make sure that the surge protector doesn't need to be repaired or replaced.

If you have problems a in a program:

  • Try rebooting or restarting the computer. Many times the computer does not need to be repaired, just restarted. It is only a temporary problem.
